To many of us some of our family history may be plain common knowledge.
Now think ahead,
25,50,100 or more years from now.
How much will our future generations know about us?
Maybe they'll be just as curious about us as I am about the lives of my
Grandparents,GreatGrandparents and earlier ancestors.
How did they live? What were their beliefs?
What consumed their everyday thoughts?
Well I think 100 years from now unless we leave them something telling them of
our daily thoughts, they will have to count on published historical documents
to even come close to understanding us.
So now I begin this long journey in helping the future understand what we were
really like.
Bob and Magolia Powell raised five children during a period that most
consider to be among the hardest times in American history.
They lived in Carroll county,Georgia during their early married
years.
Although the 1930 Census is the latest to be released my Grandmother
Magolia and Aunt Barbara told me some of the streets they lived on
after they moved to Atlanta.
The streets were Glenwood avenue,Flora avenue,Rocky ford road and second
avenue.
They finally came to rest on Lake avenue in Little 5 Points.
Their children grew up,married and lived close to them.
15 Grandchildren filled the family tree and this made the regular Saturday
afternoon dinners a rather large event.
Many of the Grandchildren lived close enough to walk up
and sit a spell on the front porch with Nanny or Grandaddy.
At that time Atlanta was relatively a small town
(about the size of Chattanooga today)
and we still had street cars on rails strolling up and down Lake avenue.
Little 5 Points still had the Bass grill
in front of Bass High School
and there was the Euclid drug store nearby.
Some of the other businesses that occupied the area were:
- Euclid Theatre (At one time there were 4 theatres)
- Little 5 points Barber Shop
- Earnest Mens Shop
- Colonial Food store
- A&P Food Store
- Halleyburton's Gas station
- Euclid Ave. Library
and many more that are gone from my memory.
It was around New Years day 1966
when we received the call from the doctor
that Grandaddy (Bob) was terminally ill with Bone Cancer.
He died on December 27th 1967.
